Detoxification

Detoxification is the removal of toxic substances from the body. After years of bad lifestyle choices,  processed foods, toxic chemicals, & toxic emotions – often the body can no longer keep up with eliminating these substances. These toxins get re-circulated into the bloodstream, wreaking havoc throughout the body, or they get stored in the liver, body fat or other parts of the body. As toxic buildups begin to occur throughout the body, problems can begin to arise in different areas of the body. 

Some common signs and symptoms of toxic overload can include the following:


  • Headaches
  • Joint pains
  • Cough
  • Itchy nose
  • Immune weakness
  • Sinus congestion
  • Frequent illness
  • Unexplained illness
  • Indigestion
  • Fatigue
  • Depression
  • Sleepiness
  • Mood changes
  • Skin rashes
  • Respiratory problems

 

Detoxification is a critical  process for achieving and maintaining health in our body. It involves the elimination of substances which are poisonous and/or for which the body has no further constructive use. All healthy cells automatically detoxify themselves everyday. Up to 80% of all processes of the human body are for detoxification. This means that 80% of a person’s physical health picture comes from their ability to efficiently detoxify and eliminate waste.

Our environment is full of toxins in our air, our water, and in our food. Detoxification should be ongoing if one is to avoid the unpleasant symptoms we feel when toxins accumulate in our bodies. Toxins keep our bodies from functioning optimally. Overloading the colon and liver, toxins inhibit normal cellular and organ system functions, and are carcinogenic.  Toxins also cause free-radical formation. Free-radicals are a huge component of disease and aging in our bodies. Toxic buildups and problems throughout the body can contribute to the development of a serious illness.   How each person handles his or her toxic burden is dependent on his or her genetics and lifestyle, but almost everyone needs to go through some type of body cleanse & detoxification a couple of times a year; especially after long winter months or periods of prolonged processed and fast food indulgence.

Detoxification starts with minimizing your intake of toxins.  FIRST, drink purified  WATER. We are made up of 70% water. It is very important to drink ½ of your weight in ounces of water everyday. NEXT, eat whole, natural, unprocessed food as much as possible. Look for foods that are organic, free range, &/or pesticide-free.  Not only are organic foods pesticide and hormone free, but they are grown in nutrient rich soil so their vitamin and nutrient content are much, much higher than standard foods. We cannot completely isolate ourselves from all toxins or eat a perfectly clean and nutritious diet; because of this we need to supplement our diet with vitamins and minerals.

We also need to actively detoxify our bodies. Exercise is one of the easiest to detoxify.  Sweating through exercise will release many pesticides through sweat glands in the skin. Dry skin brushing is another great way to aid the body in detoxifying.  Dietary, herbal, and colon cleanses assist the body in removal of toxic waste. The colon has to be in good working order: optimally 2-3 bowel movements a day – before the liver and other systems can be effectively and properly cleansed. Herbal detoxification and cleansing products can invigorate the organs and help the body better process food nutrients and eliminate the waste and toxins it is unable to process. The result is a reduction or elimination of symptoms like headaches, pain, fatigue and so on.  Note:  in order to lose and maintain weight, the liver, colon and other digestive/intestinal organs have to be clean and functioning well.

As you body lightens its toxic load you should feel more balanced and energetic. Your mind will be clear and sharp;  and your skin will seem to glow. Your breath will be fresh and  your body odor will not be offensive. Detoxification will slow the physical consequences of aging down, and even reverse some of the signs of aging.

Do you need a Colonic? Just what exactly is colon Hydrotherapy? Read on to find out!!!

I believe colonics should be done because cleansing and rebuilding a poorly functioning colon is one of the most important steps you can take to greatly reduce the risk of colon cancer and achieve and improved state of health.

The relationship between the colon and the rest of the body

  • The average person is carrying several pounds of dried fecal matter impacted in the colon as a result of eating flour, meat, fat, dairy products, sugar, alcohol and preservatives.
  • Average food transit time is 18 to 24 hours in a healthy colon. We have seen clients who have bowel movements every two to seven days! Even once a day may indicate constipation, depending on food consumption.
  • In America, over two million people per year a diagnosed with colon disease. Remember, CANCER OF THE COLON IS SECOND TO HEART DISEASE AS THE MOST FREQUENT CAUSE OF DEATH TODAY and Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is on the rise

*If you have severe symptoms or any serious disorders, seek the attention of a health care professional. The above is meant only indicate some of the symptoms of autointoxication. It is safe to say that anyone who has been on a Standard American Diet (S.A.D.) Will benefit from periodic internal cleansing, especially if you live in an urban area, where pollutants are high.

  • Surprisingly, healthy elimination should be within one to two hours after eating. If you eat three to five times a day, your bowel should move accordingly. Bowel movements once a day, or every two or three days, are considered normal in America. This is common, but it is insufficient to maintain health.
  • Foul-smelling stool and gas are also danger signs. The healthy color of your stool is golden brown and has minimal odor. During constipation, you may observe a darkening of the stool. This is caused by the longer transition time in your system with residues lying in your colon for more than 12 hours. The result is that the colon will distribute the poisons into your bloodstream and every organ of your body, which is called toxemia or autointoxication.
  • We may indulge in daily routines that are direct causes of constipation. There are three habits working against Mother Nature. First is eating refined and processed foods. They do not provide quality energy to our cellular structure and to the organs responsible for the elimination of waste matter. Second is neglecting to stop everything we are doing to answer the call of nature. Third is not drinking enough water. We should drink enough water to equal half our weight in ounces daily, one half-hour before meals – or digestive juices become diluted.
  • A toxic bowel is the source of many health problems. Colon cleansing is a valuable procedure that activates the body’s self-healing process by washing down the old, toxic mucus lining of the bowel, thereby allowing a more efficient means of waste elimination and nutrient absorption. Both are essential to any lasting rejuvenation process. This is also the first step toward normalizing the colon so that the friendly bacteria can return to keep the colon safe from putrefaction.

SO just WHAT is a Colonic?

Colon Hydrotherapy is referred to as colon irrigation, colonics, colon therapy or high enemas. Colon Hydrotherapy is clean & relaxing. A soothing flow of filtered, temperature controlled water gently circulates throughout the colon, coaxing your body to release the accumulated toxins & waste.

The colon is a muscular organ 5 to 6 feet in length. Two to three bowel movements a day are needed to keep this muscle strengthened and toned. Colon hydrotherapy is a gentle purified-water washing of the large intestine. The physical goals of each session are to: hydrate the system, remove waste, stimulate peristalsis, reposition the intestines, and rehabilitate the nerves, muscles, glands, circulatory and immune system.

Two primary benefits of colon hydrotherapy:

1. The first primary benefit of colon hydrotherapy is that you are strengthening and toning the colon muscle itself. The colon is the largest muscle in the body. Colonics force this muscle to gain strength and tone. A series of colonics is like a workout program for the colon. It is well known that working out regularly is the best plan for increasing muscle strength. Once the colon is strengthened and toned it will be emptying 2-3 times a day on its own. These more natural bowel movements help retain this strong muscle tone. The more colonics you do the stronger your colon muscle will become.

2. The second primary benefit of colon hydrotherapy is that when the contents of the colon are emptied, all of the other organs in the body will begin releasing toxins. Even with two-three bowel movements per day the colon still retains the remnants of 8-10 meals in it at any given time. When we empty the colon all at once, the other organs in the body can then release their stored toxins into the empty colon. For thousands of years the main method used to detoxify the organ system was fasting. However, most people today are unable to do a fast because they get very sick from the numerous amount of toxins suddenly released into their system. This is a result of the increased level of toxins people are absorbing through chemically polluted air, water and food.

I believe that most disease is a manifestation of a toxic state. Even if you inherited a genetic tendency for some specific disease, if you never allowed your system to become toxic, you would very likely not succumb to that disease. Disease will present itself wherever your weakest genetic link is. It is the choices you make every day; like what you eat, drink, the products you use, and how often you detoxify your system that determines your risk factors for disease. The alarming increase in the number of people with degenerative diseases, such as diabetes, cancer and Alzheimer’s is basically just the end result of our modern and very toxic inner and outer environment. As the level of toxicity on our planet continues to grow, it is very important to allow our organs to detoxify on a regular basis.

***Probiotics are very beneficial and necessary if you are going to do colonics. When the colon has been cleaned and unfriendly bacteria has been removed, you are also removing some of the friendly bacteria. These good or ‘friendly’ bacteria need to be replaced. A probiotic is a combination of many strains of friendly bacteria together with more strength than a single strain. The reason we want this friendly bacteria in the small and large intestines is that it lives naturally in the intestines and helps maintain a healthy balance of intestinal flora.  These friendly bacteria are the main line of defense for your immune system. A good high quality probiotic is the single most important supplement you should take every day to protect your health long term.

A recently retired medical examiner estimated that less than 10% of the people he performed autopsies on had a normal colon. This is really sad as it is the primary detox organ for your entire body. When this organ is not functioning properly, the end result is usually autointoxication. This occurs any time your colon is not emptying 2-3 times a day. The toxins go back through the colon wall and return to the blood stream, liver, kidneys and other organs causing your entire system to become toxic. The extra burden placed on your immune system causes you to become exhausted and creates a lack of energy for normal activities. Eventually, when the immune system becomes burdened enough, it can no longer protect you and your body becomes susceptible to disease. Right now, in America, colon cancer kills 400 times more people than AIDS. If you consider how many deaths are colon related due to autointoxication, let alone the fact that 400 times more people are dying from colon cancer than AIDS, a majority of the deaths in America begin with a colon problem. You just never hear about it because nobody wants to talk about it. That is why it is so important to keep the colon in great shape, going three times a day and functioning as it was designed to do. By doing a series of colonics each year it allows your organs to release stored toxins. Releasing toxins frees up a lot of energy in the body, engaging it’s innate ability to heal itself.

Are You Constipated?

How do you know if you are constipated?

You are constipated if you have 1 or less bowel movements each day. That ‘s right. You need to have a least one Every Day. Preferably more. Ideally one meal should push out the next.

One of the most common reasons people have a hard time with constipation is that they are dehydrated. If your colon is not absorbing enough water, it will not be able to push the toxic stuff out. You know what happens to this toxic stuff? It stays inside you, making you extremely uncomfortable, fatigued, possibly even giving you a headache from all of the extra toxins. If you have a toxic build up inside your colon, it makes it extremely difficult for your body to absorb nutrients and burn bad fat off your body; so you will have a harder time losing weight too.

Sometimes even after transitioning from a not so healthy diet of processed foods to a new healthy nutrition plan you have to deal with constipation. This is because you are probably feeding your body more natural foods that contain a lot more healthy fiber than your body is used to and it may just take some time to adjust 😦 Drink as much water as you possibly can!!

Those are just 2 of the many reasons you may be experiencing constipation…there are many more. The important question is how do you tackle this uncomfortable problem?

I do not recommend OCT laxatives or even natural herbal laxative formulas on a regular basis. Many laxative supplements, natural or otherwise, can cause painful cramps or send you sprinting to the bathroom. Even if they do not have an extreme effect on you, they can become habit-forming and help you form an ongoing problem with constipation. Certain herbal formulas are OK during a cleanse or detox- but try some of the more natural suggestions first.

1. Make sure you are drinking enough water each and every day!!!  You should be drinking half of your body weight in ounces of water each day. For example, if you weigh 200 pounds, you need 100 ounces of water. You don’t have to start with that amount all at once but make sure you slowly build yourself up to drinking your targeted amount- drinking a minimum of 64 ounces each day.

2. Add extra fiber to your meals!!! Freshly ground flax or chia seeds are a great choice. Fresh flax or chia seeds can be purchased at most health food stores and at Vitacost. I grind mine up in a coffee grinder and have 2 TBSP in my protein shake every morning. You can also add a tablespoon to a bowl of morning oatmeal, yogurt or even to salads or on top of fruit. Not only will you be increasing your fiber content for the day, you will be adding extra healthy Omega 3′s to your meals. There are many other great choices for fiber and it is a good idea to use a variety. Fiber is very important and I will do a whole post on it soon.

3. Make sure to include enough raw foods into each one of your meals. You should have at least 1 raw component with each meal. For example, for breakfast and snacks include some fresh fruit or raw nuts. For lunch and dinner have some raw veggies (cucumbers, carrots and tomatoes). Cooked vegetables are great (I love sautéed spinach and cooked cauliflower) but you will benefit more from the naturally occurring enzymes in fruits and veggies if eaten raw so make sure to include both cooked and raw into meals.

4. Try a squatting stool during a BM. I know, it  sounds crazy, but the natural way for doing your business is in the squatting position. A stool is one simple solution for helping you achieve better elimination while going to the bathroom. A simple toilet stool helps you eliminate faster and more complete by putting you in the squatting position right over your own toilet. Seriously, you cant imagine how much this helps. Go to the Squatty Potty site and watch their videos. Too funny, but very informative. I have a great sense of humor, but being constipated is never funny. (Unless it’s not you lol)

5. If you are still having a hard time try starting the day with this great “digestive tonic”: 1 TBSP fresh squeezed lemon juice in one 8 oz. glass of water with a dash of cayenne pepper. This morning concoction will help to stimulate your bowels and release whatever “bad stuff” may be stuck to your colon walls.

6. Try an enema. I know, I know. But they can very cleansing and refreshing. Seriously. And it is not that big of a deal in the privacy of your own home. I promise 🙂

More about Enemas:

An enema helps cleanse the colon so nutrients can be absorbed properly and help to keep diseases from taking hold of the body.  Almost any ailment can be helped by cleansing the colon.   An enema can bring relief  and a turn toward recuperation when someone is feeling very ill.  During a fever, an enema can quickly remove toxins from the body and relieve symptoms. When you feel like you are catching a cold or something more serious, often doing a water and coffee enema will quickly help your body shed the infectious poisons.

Enemas can release old encrusted colon waste, discharge parasites, freshen the intestinal tract and make the cleansing process easier and more thorough.  Enemas accelerate any cleanse for optimum results.  They are especially helpful during a healing crisis, after a serious illness to speed healing, or to remove drug residues.  Migraines and skin problems like psoriasis are also helped with enemas.

Coffee enemas are a great way start the detox process in your body.  The coffee travels from the colon thru the hepatic vein directly to the liver.  The coffee stimulates the liver to release toxins, opens bile ducts, encourages increased peristaltic action, and produces the necessary enzyme activity for healthy red blood cell formation. Coffee enemas enhance digestion by increasing bile flow.

While enemas may seem uncomfortable the results are worth the inconvenience.
